The Gypping in the Marsh Podcast

We are delighted to present a brand new podcast series, all about the unique, historic Lincolnshire village of Gypping in the Marsh. Join our hosts, Dean and Laura, as they discuss all things Gypping in the Marsh - its history, its culture, its traditions, its prominent buildings, its famous inhabitants... this podcast series has it all.

Episode 1 - Introduction to Gypping in the Marsh

Dean and Laura introduce us to the delightful Lincolnshire village of Gypping in the Marsh - the cabbage capital of Lincolnshire - and discuss its long and fascinating history, exploring how geography and past events, both local and national, have helped to shape the village that we know and love today.

Episode 2 - Hemlock Hall and the Earls of Gypping

Dean and Laura return to the unique Lincolnshire village of Gypping in the Marsh and discuss one of the village's most iconic buildings: Hemlock Hall, the seat of the Earls of Gypping. As well as exploring the history of the building itself, they delve deep into the story behind the Murray family and discuss how the Murrays came to have such influence over Gypping in the Marsh and its people.

Episode 3 - Saint Bodkin's Church

Dean and Laura explore the beautiful building that has been the heart and soul of Gypping in the Marsh for over a thousand years: Saint Bodkin's church. As well as discussing the history and architecture of this fine building, they talk about the recent conversion to the Church of Zeal or No Zeal, and how this has affected both the physical building itself and the people of the village.

Episode 4 - Important dates in the Gypping in the Marsh village calendar

This week, Dean and Laura discuss two of the most important dates in the Gypping in the Marsh village calendar: the Feast Day of Saint Bodkin and the May Day Wicker Bunny Burning. As well as delving deep into the history of these events and the meanings behind them, they discuss the controversies surrounding the events and how they link our modern world to a more ancient past.

Episode 5 - Gilbert Murray, Member of Parliament for Gypping in the Marsh

Dean and Laura take a look at the life and times of Gypping in the Marsh's colourful Member of Parliament, Gilbert Murray. They discuss Gilbert's long history of representing the people of the village, the controversial events that led to him stepping down as the village's MP in the early 2000s and his recent triumphant return to Parliament. They also delve into Gilbert's interests and talents, his unique personality, and the legal difficulties that have dogged him throughout his time as an MP.

Episode 6 - Gilbert Murray, Gypping in the Marsh's famous inventor

This episode, Dean and Laura discuss the fascinating life of another Gilbert Murray from Gypping in the Marsh: Gilbert Murray the celebrated inventor. Our hosts talk about some of Gilbert's most important inventions, as well as discussing some of his less-successful ideas, and possible reasons for their failure. This episode is a must-listen for fans of science and innovation, and for anyone who has ever considered attaching electrodes to the genitals of their pet dog.

Episode 7 - Wing Commander Gilbert Murray, DSO, CBE, SOB (rtd.)

This episode, Dean and Laura delve into the life and times of one of Gypping in the Marsh's most highly-decorated citizens: Wing Commander Gilbert Murray, DSO, CBE, SOB (rtd.), who can be found most evenings propping up the bar in the Cock and Bull, regaling people with often somewhat off-colour reminiscences of his time in the RAF. This is perhaps not an episode to listen to if you hail from Cornwall.

Episode 8 - The eminent Welsby, the finest legal brain in Lincolnshire

This week, Dean and Laura explore the life and work of the eminent lawyer, Welsby, of the legal firm Elton and Welsby. Widely regarded as the finest lawyer in Lincolnshire, Welsby has the distinction of being the only lawyer in the county who has never lost his case. Tune in to hear about some of his most interesting cases and how he has become the 'go to' lawyer for anyone in Gypping in the Marsh who finds themselves in legal difficulties.

Episode 9 - Beaker, a man of many talents?

This week, Dean and Laura discuss a man whose name has cropped up in a few of the podcasts in this series: Beaker. Currently the PA to the local MP, Gilbert Murray, Beaker has had a wide range of jobs during his time in Gypping in the Marsh, including inventor's assistant, verger at Saint Bodkin's church, and butler at Hemlock Hall. Tune in to hear all about one of Gypping in the Marsh's most enigmatic - and misunderstood - inhabitants.
